Live #84, Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile (Day 3)

#105_tdp314/04/2015 The third day of my trek in Torres del Paine National Park would finally lead me to one of the highlights: Paso John Gardner. I was happy to wake up full of energy after a very comfortable night without any rats around this time and had to cross a second hanging bridge, spanned high above the valley at an awesome viewpoint of the glacier. Taking pictures in that situation turned out to be pretty difficult because of the bridge’s movement.. Read the rest of this entry »

Live #83, Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile (Day 2)

#104_tdp213/04/2015 I was happy to leave the rat-infested camp of the first night behind and fixed the holes in my new tent. Happy for the sun to provide warmth after a cold morning, I soon got to see the first splendid views on Glaciar Grey in the distance. My plan was to hike up to Paso John Gardner, but I knew that the circuit was officially closed and when two french hikers passed me on the way down after being sent back from a ranger, I had to come up with a damn good first impression in order to convince him to let me pass… Read the rest of this entry »

Live #82, Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile (Day 1)

#103_tdp112/04/2015 Torres del Paine… Everyone who ever thought about going to Patagonia certainly knows about this location. It is utterly breath taking and I saved it for the end of my trip in southern Chile. Making my way from Puerto Natales, I came prepared with enough food for the six day hike around the famous towers. Check out this update to find out what happened during the first day hiking to Mirador Condor and especially about the unexpected visitor in the night, preventing me from getting any sleep. Live #81, Puerto Natales, Chile

#102_puertonatales10/04/2015 Puerto Natales serves as an entry point to the famous peaks of Torres del Paine in the Chilean Patagonia. I spent a few days in the charming little town to prepare my trip and enjoy the good weather while having a rather unusual Couchsurfing expierence… Read the rest of this entry »

Live #80, Punta Arenas & Cabo Froward, Chile

#101_capofroward06/04/2015 I left Tierra del Fuego and Argentina towards Punta Arenas in Chile and was once again blessed with a great Couchsurfing host, taking me out for a spontaneous horse ride on her farm just after my arrival. On the next day, I started the four day trek to Capo Froward, which requires an exact timing for the tides because you might be stranded otherwise. Some blogger wrote that you should be a “hardcore trekking, camping, outdoorsy person (or German)” to do this hike. Meeting all requirements, it was a perfect match for me! Read the rest of this entry »

Live #79, Ushuaia Bouldering, Argentina

#100_ushuaia205/04/2015 After my unfinished hike to Cerro del medio, I had one more thing on my wish list down in Argentina’s most southern town of Ushuaia: Go out for some Bouldering! In the end, I was carrying my climbing shoes with me all the time, so I was happy for every opportunity. Luckily, some friends of my Couchsurfing host took me out to some local spots about 30 km east of the town. Read the rest of this entry »

Live #78, Ushuaia, Argentina

#99_ushuaia103/04/2015 My mind was blown away after 10 amazing days in Antarctica and I returned to Ushuaia just in time for the first fresh snow of the year. The town was surrounded by snow covered peaks and I spent half an hour just looking at them while breathing in the clear crisp air around me. I would spent some days here for a hike before taking the road up north towards one of the bridges that connects the island Tierra del Fuego with the mainland of Argentina. Live #77, Crossing Drake Passage, Antarctica

#98_antarctica_drakepassage01/04/2015 “All good things must come to an end.” a wise man once said, and so did our trip to Antarctica. We only spent a couple of days in that remote and magnificent place, but it felt like a much longer time. We saw breathtaking, ice-covered landscapes and a lot of wild life and now it was time to head back “home” towards Ushuaia, crossing the Drake Passage one more time to reach the mainland of South America again. Live #76, Deception Island, Half Moon Bay, Antarctica

#97_antarctica_deceptionisland31/03/2015 We arrived at the South Shetland Islands on the last day in March and also the last of our Expedition to Antarctica. After navigating into Deception Island, a caldera of an active volcano, we visited Whalers Bay and explored the remains of an old whaling station before rounding the trip off at Half Moon Bay and it’s colony of Chinstrap penguins. Live #75, Cuverville Island, Foyn Harbour, Antarctica

#96_antarctica_cuvervilleharbour30/03/2015 Day 6 on Antarctica started early again at 06:30 with a delicious breakfast. We would have our coldest day so far and be surrounded by at least 20 whales while attempting to strike another landing at Cuverville Island. Read the rest of this entry »
