RTW #94, Valizas & Cabo Polonia, Uruguay

[06/05/2015] After a quick stop in Uruguay’s capital of Montevideo, I made my way to Barra de Valizas and hiked about 9km along a beautiful empty beach towards isolated Cabo Polonio, only accessible by walking or taking a 4×4 beach over an offroad track. Read the rest of this entry »

RTW #93, Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

114_colonia03/05/2015 On my way towards Brazil, I had a few days to spare in Uruguay and explore one of the lesser known South American countries. Arriving from Buenos Aires in Argentina, my first point of contact was the UNESCO World Heritage town of Colonia del Sacramento and the brown water at it’s waterfront did not look at all like a “river of the colorful bird”, which is the Guarani translation of the word Uruguay 🙂

RTW #92, Bariloche, Argentina

#113_bariloche28/04/2015 Bariloche was my last proper hiking opportunity for a while with Buenos Aires and then Uruguay as the next destinations. I made the most of the time by hiking for 3 days and 2 nights through the great landscapes of Argentina’s Lake District, scrambling up steep cliffs and camping on the peaks with some incredible views. RTW #91, Villa la Angostura, Argentina

#112_villalaangostura27/04/2015 I finally made it to Argentina’s Lake District with Villa la Angostura as my entry point. The lovely little town was covered in Volcan Calbuco’s ash and I enjoyed my lonely hike up to one of the nearby mountains, wandering through the bizarre looking landscape. Live #90, Puyehue, Chile

#111_puyehue26/04/2015 Volcan Calbuco remained calm and I was headed to Villa la Angostura in Argentina. The journey involved a lot of hitch hiking and walking through ash-covered landscapes after the eruption, providing a rather uncommon expierence. Read the rest of this entry »

Live #89, Puerto Varas, Frutillar & Llanquihue, Chile

#110_puertovaras24/04/2015 I was making my way out of Chiloé, pretty excited to see the still erupting volcano Calbuco from the ferry. I would soon get very close in reaching the town of Puerto Varas, without a clue if and when I could make my way towards the border to cross into Argentina. Read the rest of this entry »

Live #88, Chiloé & Volcan Calbuco eruption, Chile

22/04/2015 After attending a lecture about Chiloé during the navimag ferry ride, I decided to change my plans and visit the biggest island off central Chile’s coast, known for wooden churches and myths about trolls or ghost ships. While I did not encounter any of those, I was actually stuck because of Volcan Calbuco’s spectacular eruption in nearby Puerto Varas. Read the rest of this entry »

Live #87, Navigmag, Chile

#108_navimag19/04/2015 The 4-day Navimag cruise from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt is known for it’s amazing views on the Patagonian Fjords and the chance to see blue whales. I was lucky with the whales, but not so much with the weather, leaving me with mostly grey skies and rain.  Read the rest of this entry »

Live #86, Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile (Days 5 & 6)

#107_tdp516/04/2015 It was the fifth and final (full) day of my trek through Torres del Paine. The weather conditions remained the same; a freezing cold morning, followed by a great sunny day. I would make my way through an impressive canyon before attempting an early morning sunrise hike towards the Torres Lake, hoping that the weather would stick around for just a bit longer as rain was dominating the forecast in the next days.. Live #85, Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile (Day 4)

#106_tdp415/04/2015 The ice on my tent was a remnant of the bitter cold night and I had to start walking in my shorts after falling to the ground and opening up a wound on my knee. I couldn’t help but smile when I was asked if I would be heading to the beach! My final destination for the day would be Mirador of Vallé Frances though, offering a first close-up view on the famous Torres. Read the rest of this entry »
