Travel Costs #01 incl. Country Statistics!

26 Mar

Here is a first update from my Travel Costs, including everything until today! Back in my original post about general travel costs and how to travel cheaply, I actually included all the future upcoming flights into the statistics. This has now been fixed and the following stats only count every expense until today and nothing that is booked ahead, reflecting the current daily cost a bit more accurate. I have also added a breakdown of the average costs for all the countries in detail.

Travel Costs – First Update

I am tracking all of my expenses in detail since I started to travel full time from October 2014.

It currently sums up to 17.914,75 € during 664 days with an average per day cost of 26,98 €.

(As of: March 24th, 2017)

This figure includes everything: Transportation, Food, Accommodation, Booked Trips and all the Rest such as buying new batteries or getting a haircut for example. (see Excel screenshot)

Thanks to Couchsurfing and Hitchhiking, I can keep my costs in the Transportation and Accommodation areas generally low. The more useful figure to compare the costs of different regions is Food, which includes everything I eat and drink and averages out to 7,38€ per day:

Keep in mind that I always travel and consume in the same way, but some regions might have more expensive “night outs” than others 😉

Country Breakdown #01

As promised in my original post, here is the breakdown of each country I have spent more than 10 days in so far since starting the data collection in October 2014:

I am writing this post from Myanmar and spent a few days in the local villages and could eat lunch there for as low as 0,20€! Once you get into the tourist spots, this figure can rise up to 3,00€ for the same dish. Feel free to ask me specific questions about the different countries in the comments! I can probably explain a few of the surprising figures 🙂

Maybe some day I will write a book about this when I am done traveling… I will certainly have enough data 😉

Would have expected Norway to be higher up, but we did a roadtrip there and lived off cheap supermarket stuff 🙂

Very cool, interesting that you found the USA as cheap as Thailand & Malaysia. But how did you get by in France at virtually the same price? You’re a miracle worker.

Nice statistics. I do the same … at least in Excel, not yet in the blog. 😉
What surprises me is 8 € food costs in the Caribbean. Which countries you have visited? Even strongly relying on supermarkets make it hard to live for 8 € in nearly all the Lesser Antilles and the ABC Islands. I imagine you have been in Dominican Republic and/or Cuba?
    Cheers from Santo Domingo
