Arctic Circle Trail in Greenland (June 2014)

My decision to travel around the world for two years kept me pretty busy and excited in the last weeks, but eventually I also had to take care of the trips prior to that and especially this remote one is something to look out for: Greenland, the world’s largest Island. Check out what I’ve planned and see if you want to join me on the 165km long Arctic Circle Trail!

Going to Greenland seems to be the perfect “warm up” for the ultimate ice experience – the Antarctic – which I plan to visit this December/January. Actually you can only get there from Denmark or Iceland with only one Airline serving the Island of Greenland. Unsurprisingly, the prices are pretty high but I think I managed to get the cheapest possible combination of Flights and Ships right in time as one of the flights only had two seats left when I purchased the ticket.

This is my current plan, in case you should be interested to join me, please Google up the bold terms to get an idea on what it is since I’m not going to explain here:

On May 26th, I will fly in from Copenhagen to the main airport hub in the west, Kangerlussuaq, which just seems to be a remote airstrip in the middle of nowhere. From there, I will take on a 1-2 days hike to the Russel’s Glacier, which is the first point of contact with the immense ice cap that covers most of the Island. Hiking back to Kangerlussuaq, I will then take a one-way flight to Ilulissat in the north on the 29th of May and stay in the area for three days to fully enjoy the amazing Ilulissat Ice Fjord and Disco Bay before boarding a Ship on June 1st to Sisimiut. Getting one day to rest, I will then start to hike the 165km long Arctic Circle Trail back to Kangerlussuaq, which usually takes about nine days. Having two backup days in case some delays will occur, I will fly back to Copenhagen on June 14th.

Obviously, this trip will feature a massive outdoor trail and everyone who wants to join in would need to bring full hiking equipment including a tent and cooker. There is no form of civilization on the Artic Circle Trail, so all the food and other goods need to be carried in the backpack. Some more random facts:

– I will celebrate my 30th Birthday on June 2nd after arriving in Sisimut. So we might end up starting the 165km hike a bit hangover!

– We will be able to see huge Ice Bergs crushing down in Ilulissat, certainly something I am looking most forward to.

– We will also see a lot of whales possibly on the way from Ilulissat to Sisimut, especially during the “stop over” in Aasiaat.

– The Midnight sun will be up during this trip which means it will never get dark!

– The main season to do the hike starts mid june, so we might have some snow/ice on the way in case of a long winter but we should be able to avoid the massive mosquito swarms o the summer!

Anyone who is interested to join should send me a message on Facebook, even though I don’t expect that to be too many people 🙂
